It turns out that crane flies are not as dangerous as we may have thought while growing up. It’s quite the opposite, they are completely harmless to humans and can also be beneficial to the environment! Once hatched, they don’t consume any solid matter but get their nutrients from nectar on flowers which also helps with pollination. These little critters can grow to around 2 ½ inches in length and has a wingspan of around 3 inches! With their tiny thorax and long skinny legs, their bodies are about twice as small as their legs! Crane flies will only emerge from the soil during wet periods of winter and spring to lay their eggs on the surface, the lifespan of the crane fly is a short 15 days. Gardeners love these insects as their larvae feeds on the decaying organic matter.
